Description: The General is the longest, most continuously runnable whitewater
river in Costa Rica. It’s unique for its scenery, a
combination of pasture lands and tropical forests in the backbone
of the Talamanca Mountain Region. The Welcome of this section is
one fast and steady class II+ rapid, a little over a mile long.
After such initiation, rapids like Sapollo and Palmares Bridge
will certainly burst our adrenaline before we stop for lunch. We
start paddling and soon after the Peñas Blancas River add
in a significant amount of flow. The river turns bigger, making
the run of “Trompo Rapid” a fantastic Class III chute.
About 45 more minutes of Class III rapids still remain after the
Bridge of the Panamerican Highway. This run is spectacular, it
makes for a pleasant day trip and provides an interesting behind
the - scenes look at the houses, farms and fields that parallel
the Pan-American Highway.
