exciting different routes to match different levels of difficulty.
Back roads go through these hills minimizing the ups and downs,
creating pleasant and varied scenery with moderate difficulty.
The
road surfaces then become important because of the same excess of
rain and the effect on roads. Most of them are dirt with gravel
which soon becomes absorbed by the soft surface making it somewhat
muddy, but still very enjoyable.

Aguas Bravas

Description: For
three kilometers the trip is by an asphalted street and the rest
is for a non-asphalted one. By traveling near the river you will
enjoy the view of a great variety of both animals and plants, not
to mention the still water pools of the river.
The trip is
starts at “Islas del Rio” with a short speech about
how to use the bikes and the order in which the trip will be made,
besides all the info and the rules which are going to be applied
during the trip. The level of difficulty is moderated; here we can
find slopes, mud, stones and a landscape that assures fun to all
the participants.

Costa Rica Biking Adventure

San José, at Miraflores suburb (Guadalupe)
Description: Salimos de San
José hacia Ciudad Colón donde empezaremos nuestro
recorrido en bicicleta a partir de la iglesia. De la iglesia nos
dirigimos sobre calle asfaltada pero con escaso tráfico
hacia la Universidad para la Paz. Este trecho de ruta es entre
vegetación de un bosque de transición en el que
podemos apreciar árboles que pertenecen al bosque seco como
el espavel. Esto a pesar de estar a solo unos pocos kilómetros
de San José. Siguiendo esta ruta nos encontramos con una
intersección entre el asfalto y la tierra. Nosotros tomamos
esta de tierra, la cual está en muy buenas condiciones y es
cuesta abajo aunque no muy pronunciada pero por un trecho de 12½
kilómetros hasta llegar a un puente con estructura de
aluminio en donde el sentido de la cuesta cambia de descendente a
ascendente. Este
segundo segmento es para personas con cierta condición
física, no por ser un camino malo sino por lo inclinado de
la pendiente. En este igual que en otros tours, nuestro vehículo
de apoyo le seguirá todo el tiempo para asistirle con
líquidos hidratantes, nueces y descanso si fuere necesario.
El escenario es de bosque de transición a lo largo de toda
la ruta. Llegamos al pueblo de La Guácima en donde
finalizamos la ruta para proceder a almorzar en el pueblo.

Description: This tour will take bikers through the tropical plantations and
botanical gardens of CATIE. The topography of the trails is not
difficult. All level bike riders and children older than eight
years old can enjoy this trip. During the bike ride, a guide will
explain the great diversity of the forest and fruit plantations
such as: coffee, cacao, sugar cane, citrus, plantains, bananas,
macadamia, pineapple, mangostan, mango, avocados and many other
exotic species from tropical countries. Bike riders will see the
fruits in the plantations when it is the specific time of the year
for the fruit. Thanks to the diversity in flowers and fruits, the
plantation is also an ideal site for the observation of birds,
mammals and some reptiles. Bike riders will finish the tour with a
visit to the Tropical Botanical Garden, which has a collection of
some of the most important tropical plants in the world. In the
garden, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the colors, smells,
textures and forms of the plants and their products. Riders will
be provided with top-quality mountain bikes in excellent condition
and safety helmets which you will be required to wear.
